As far as I know no engine has ever failed due to having the engine oil changed too often.

There needs to be a balance of course, unless the usage is unbelievable harsh then 3000 miles is probably short for the average car owner.

The fact that many manufacturers hide a "Severe Service" interval somewhere in the handbook or service book says a lot.

I suppose you could look at it in three ways.

If you are leading then so the absolute minimum required to ensure you are meeting your contractural obligations.

If you are buying and changing car every 3 or 4 years then again you are unlikely to have trouble during your ownership doing the absolute minimum.

If you intend a long ownership period or like to keep your vehicle in as good a condition as possible with lots of preventative maintenance then do a mid interval oil and filter change.

The interval on my XJL was 16000 miles, too long imho, so I simply did an extra oil and filter change at around half way, the advantage for me specifically is if I was close to the 16k and suddenly had a weeks work on (doing say 1500miles in a week) that delayed the service then getting it done at 17k would make no difference as the oil was only 8/9k old anyway.

Old habits die hard I suppose, when I was a courier years ago it was not uncommon for some people to do 1000mile oil changes, which for some could easily be every fortnight. They tended to be keen bikers who treated maintenance as more of a hobby than a chore.

When I had a Scooter (250cc X Max) back in 2011/12 I did 1000mile oil changes, but then it didn't have an oil filter, just a strainer. An oil change took 10minutes and if I remember correctly it took about 1 1/2 litres.
