Editing a WAV or MP3 file

Hi,
I have an audio file in WAV and MP3 format. I need to edit this file, specifically removing the beginning and end of the recording and increasing the volume of specific elements.
I have no idea how to do this.
Can anybody advise on some free downloadable, easy to use software? I assume I can't do this using the MS Windows and Office software.

you can edit tracks in audacity, but to save them as an mp3, you will need the LAME MP3 encoder0

As gaming guy said, use Audacity and the mp3 codec http://lame.sourceforge.net/index.php and here are the insructions: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/tutorials
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
