issues with my name (as in the letters)

Hi guys
so this is the issue i'm hoping you can help me with.
I'm living in London for almost 3 years now and i have Lloyd Classic Account which was very easy to setup.
The problems started when i tried to switch to the Coop bank. It was refused because the credit rating was low.
Tried an account without savings or overdrafts and this time they said the name on the application didn't match with the document.
Tried again and same result.
Later tried a credit card (Aqua) to increase the credit score and same issue.
The document is the passport and it states
First Name: joao paulo
Last Name: marques matos
with a small difference. There is a tilde "~" in the first "A" of my first name.
Could this be the reason? What to do?

I'd have thought it's unlikely to be the tilde - more likely either a misspelling on their files, or that they have your surname as Matos, your first name as Joao, and your middle names as Paulo Marques, making you Mr Joao Matos.
Best bet would be to give them a call and see if they can explain.0
