The £30.50 amount sounds more like the account is set up on a Monthly Payment Plan. (MPP)
BT take a set amount each month but the bills are sent quarterly.
If the monthly payment is not covering the bills it will increase.

Quick fix to this is to change it to a whole bill direct debit.0
