Physically moving a gas meter
Has anyone had any experience with this? We are moving into a house in which the garage was been converted into habitable space, but with the gas meter still located within.
Ideally we would like the gas meter moved either under the stairs (1 meter or so away) or out to the front of the property (roughly 5 metres or so). A quick google search suggests that a heating engineer can't do this (or at least they shouldn't), and that the Utilities company that technically owns the meter will need to make the move.
We had half thought about asking for a smart gas meter to be installed, thinking that maybe when they fit the replacement meter they could put it under the stairs instead....

You need to ask your DNO to do it, and they will likely charge a pretty penny.0

You need to contact the gas transporter for moving your gas meter, and the DNO for moving your electric meter.0

The trouble is that Ethel and Ron , who are not on an internet, and never will be have never heard of a DNO or a gas transporter and 99% of normal people who dont inhabit online energy forums also dont know what you are on about. Suppliers don t do much for their money other than customer services and billings and that is the first port of call to Ethel and Ron when they want to shift their meter. OK if you have the inclination you can phone or register your details with a DNO or National Grid, including email if you have one and a PC to receive a reply, log on and spend 30 mins prating about, but the alternative is to simply call British Gas, or your supplier, etc and let them earn their money by arranging it on your behalf as they have always done.0

they wont move it it will just be put where existing is
moving it is a different job and possibly different skill set0 -
as far as i can remember, minor meter moves, approx less than 6 inches are usually done for free and arranged with your current gas supplier.
Anything further or moved to the other side of the wall have to be arranged through your gas transporter. About 90% of properties have National Grid as their Gas transporter, however if your one of the other 10% you will have an Independent Gas Transporter, check your most recent gas bill, which should have this listed. An engineer will be arranged to give you a quote for this meter move. If there is any relaying of pipework or any other obstacles be prepared for very costly quotes. I have had heard of some quotes in the £1000's0 -

That's why if you want something done and you don't know how to go about it, you research it.0 -
They wont be getting their meter moved then will they!:D

They ring the bloody supplier then dont they ! and researching is nt available when you re not on the internet. I ve been talking to people for years in my job and the supplier is always the first port of call, like i said, you can stop a 100 people in the street and 99% have never heard of a DNO or what the hell it stands for. Customer services number of your supplier is on the bill and its free to call them. Make them earn their money , they dont do much anyway other than billing and taking money out of your account.0 -

No point in doing a useless step when somebody has already come here to ask.sacsquacco wrote: »and researching is nt available when you re not on the internet.sacsquacco wrote: »I ve been talking to people for years in my job and the supplier is always the first port of call, like i said, you can stop a 100 people in the street and 99% have never heard of a DNO or what the hell it stands for.
No, jump straight to step 2 (ring the DNO). Don't know what DNO stands for? Google it! We are already on the web after all!
Or, look at the thread that was posted 2 minutes earlier on the same subject where I gave a direct link to find your DNO/Gas operator by typing in your postcode.sacsquacco wrote: »Customer services number of your supplier is on the bill and its free to call them. I don't understand what your argument is here.
Here is what Citizens Advice have to say about moving your meter more than 1M: https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/energy/energy-supply/your-energy-meter/move-your-gas-or-electricity-meter/
And here you can find your DNO: http://www.energynetworks.org/info/faqs/who-is-my-network-operator.html0 -
They will not say its not our business because it clearly is. From my experience a call to say, BG will result in the paperwork all being posted to the customer regarding all costs and the distances involved.BG will deal with all customer services regarding the meters. If its a stopped/damaged meter for instance they will deal with the complaint and direct it to the local DNO.Never mind what the Citizens Advice are saying from my experience they are pretty hopeless at utilities problems. I was offered a voluntary job with CAB in Goole last year when I retired because no one in the office had much knowledge about utilities to speak of.As I keep telling you time and time again you re talking a foreign language to people if you keep rabbiting on about unknown organisations such as a DNO and its quite ignorant to even refer to it as a bloody acronym .Most people pick up the phone and enquire to their supplier about the next step, and they do not say "its not our business ". OK, you inhabit an online energy forum but I can confirm to you that the population are not aware of much with the utilities, I bet most dont know what a kwh is let alone a DNO or a gas transporter.0

On this occasion I agree entirely with sacsquacco. They should expect to have to pay for any move - and probably quite a bit, 1 metre or not - but if they want to find out how much they should just call their supplier and ask them if they can sort out a quote for the job0
