Re importing car into UK
Hi all,
trying to get my head around the easiest way to do this:
Basically the situation is had a UK car for many years and then moved to Ireland. Notified DVLA of export and registered it in Ireland. Then decided it wasn't worth running in Ireland (road tax was 1100 euros!) so SORNed it.
So I am moving back to UK 1st april and want to bring the car. The current status is uninsured, untaxed and unMOTed.
DVLA say to fill out form v55 which is fine. I asked do I MOT, and they said yes. I am a bit confused as to what reg i MOT it on and what reg to insure on (or to VIN insure).
If I go on the compare websites I can get quotes for insurance on the old reg (so their systems obvioulsy still have the car properly matched to the number plate). Would these be OK?
What I want to do is put the original UK plates on. Insure on these plates via internet. Drive back over and MOT ASAP. Then do form v55. Does this sound plausible? Also on the V55 they say dont fill out the reg number, is there anyway to keep the reg (so the insurance doesnt need changed)
Any help is appreciated, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but so wish I hadn't registered it over in Ireland.
Cheers,
wes

Still got the UK V5C for it, in your name? Then that's all that's needed. SORN it asap, if it isn't already. Insure it, MOT it, tax it, and it's back on the road.
If the address on the V5C's no longer good for you, then just send it back with a change of address.0 -
Adrian thanks for the reply,
I only have a photocopy of the V5 (irish licensing took the original) but I thought about just reordering one to my UK address for £25 , however when I rang up the guy did a check on the license and said that their records do show it was exported and so a V55 was required (Although I did ask him to check, do you think if I just try to reorder a V5 they will do it?).0 -
What's the worst that'll happen? They'll send the £25 back.0

ha yeah,
do you think if I ring up again and risk it, or whether I'm better off going via the postal route
just SORNed it successfully0 -
Just put a V62 in the post. That's all they'll tell you to do on the phone anyway.0

OK Adrian thanks for the help, fingers crossed ;p0

Are you mad? The original UK registration doesn't exist anymore, you can't insure it using that number while it has a Eire reg. The car needs to be insured using the Eire reg.
I would have the car transported to Dublin docks or Northern Ireland, and drive it from there.
The car must be insured, think of the problems you will be in if you have a incident. But will have to be insured under the Eire reg. I wouldn't bother taxing it in Eire. It might not be legal, but the UK authorities won't be checking for foreign untaxed vehicles.0 -
Hi Iain,
the thing is the reg does seem to exist in the system. The insurers can see it and DVLA can see it if you run a reg check, and the system allowed me to SORN it ok. It just shows up as untaxed and unMOTd. If the V62 route worked and produced a V5 at my UK house surely that would give the car offical UK status.
If not rather than insure on Irish reg I'd probably go the route of insuring short term on the VIN number.0
