Old hard drive as 2nd drive in new PC

I have recently bought a new PC. After taking a week or so to set it up as I wanted it I transferred the hard drive my old PC into the new PC so I could access files. The PC would occasionally not boot properly so I unplugged the old drive and all was well again.

Is there anything I should/could do to stop Win 10 trying to boot from this old drive as I think this might be the issue?

Is the hard drive an IDE or SATA?

You could take a look in the BIOS to make sure which drive is the bootable drive but be careful in the BIOS because if you are not sure then I would not recommend diving about in the BIOS.

The easiest thing to do is buy a IDE or SATA to USB adapter, then you would be able to connect the USB to the computer externally and transfer your data that way.

Forgive me if I have to dust off memories a bit, but a long time ago I slapped computer bits around like Lego & I recall with 2 drives there being an issue with jumper positions.
Not the nice woolly things but tiny loops of plastic lined with fusewire that depending on which pins they linked told the drive whether it was Master or not.

These days I *cheat* with a portable external hard drive - as long as the old machine had a working USB slot, you should be good to go.

Do please be Picky about what you bring over (saves time) and only lug *data* not programs/settings etc. Depending on OS, registry etc etc you could land yourself deeply in the soup, so make life a little easier on yourself!

Once you have all you want over, I tend to ensure the old hard disk is well & truly unrecoverable with a Black & Decker drill, but that's me.

If the second drive is IDE, then yes this probably will apply, along with checking the bios as mentioned above...

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

I feel like I am reading a thread that was created back in 2004!!

who mentioned IDE , who mentioned jumpers ,

the old drive , ie: the drive that was taken from a the old computer still has the "boot" files on it

if the bios is set in such a way , then YES it will try to boot off that drive.

forget caddys and enclosures , just set the bios to boot from the CORRECT drive
