Soft Search for Switching to Another Bank

I would like to switch bank accounts firstly because of moral reasons as the bank I'm currently with provides tax avoidance for the rich and secondly I've asked for help because of a couple of hiccups which has left me a little overdrawn and they just continue to place huge charges (for me) on my account. I applied to M&S Bank and I received a letter saying that whilst I passed their credit check, they couldn't offer me an account. I don't have the best credit rating but I am trying to fix that. Is there a soft search you can look at before actually applying?

I would suggest that you repay the overdraft. That way the bank will stop adding the huge charges.
The reply from M&S bank 'you passed our credit check but we can't offer you an account' sounds a rather strange thing to be written in a letter.0 -
