Potential hack?

I look after a computer for a couple of friends, and whilst I was picking up their computer for another reason, they told me they had had a phone call about searching for financial advice online, the person on the end of the phone even had their computer password.

Have they been hacked?

The computer is just a couple of weeks old, and the only people that should know the password are me and the couple that own the computer.

Is it more likely that they have used the same password for something else, or have let someone else use their computer.

I set up the computer and I'd hate to think I did something, or hate to think that they think I did something.

Any advice welcome.
