What's a licence plate?? We aren't living in the States.

Pretty sure it's the same as a licence plate in the states.

A front number plate going missing would be a prime candidate for being used by the criminally minded to goo speed cameras or ANPR cameras as the permanently fixed ones are often positioned to get a picture of the front of the car, maybe because they can see the drivers aswell, who knows. The caveat with that is the new section on average speed limit on the A13 near Lakeside takes pictures from the rear, but I suspect that is due to the number of motorcycle commuters that are on that section of road travelling at excessive speed and not having a front plate means no speedinf fine.

Some of the local boy racers have taken to removing their front plate and leaving it on the dashboard as if it had just fallen off this second, though when on the A13 nearer London (cameras face the front of the car) they can remove it and do whatever speed they want in the average speed section.

Definite vote for informing Police, once you have it recorded if anything does happen you have a defence.

I have seen some cars with the front plate on the dash, mainly on the A3 into London, I wondered why.

I have also had both front and back plates stolen from one of my cars and reported it to the Police. Once the front one fell off when I drove through a ford and I didnt realise straight away. The next day I drove through it again and it was propped up by the side.
A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

    one life, live it!

I think he's referring to the widely used British term of Number Plate, rather than the American License plate. It's an extremely important distinction to make given most of us wouldn't know the difference.:D
  • When my rear plate went missing I presumed it had dropped of and just replaced it. Two days later I had a knock at the door and two cops were accusing me of stealing petrol from a local garage! this was 30 years ago so I had not heard of this scam then. The cops were a pair of idiots because the crime was just reported and they head straight for my address! they even said my engine was stone cold! anyway they finally believed me that I was innocent and the car or me didn't match the description given by the station attendant. Nowadays with the wide use of ANPR by the police, private car park contractors etc and the congestion charge in London this type of crime has increased greatly. BUy anti theft plates which don't come off in one piece I believe but this won't protect against someone just buying plates off the internet for your car!

Yeah, they must be idiots to follow a reasonable line of enquiry.

Why on earth would anybody steal a number plate? They are easily accessible without the need for ID and/or V5 and for dirt cheap too!

Because it makes the tankful of petrol completely free if they can get the numberplates for nothing to stick over their own ;)
