I am new to this forum but wondered if anyone has any advice on finding accommodation in Rio for the Olympic Games? I have been accepted as a volunteer in the Press Office and will be in the Barra district at the Olympic Stadium, we have many Facebook pages but we are struggling to find affordable accommodation for the 6 weeks we volunteer for! Most of us have already paid out an average of £1000 each for flights and the price goes up daily. Although we love volunteering many of us have been priced out of being able to go. Any help appreciated.

Cripes, it's very late to be looking for accommodation for an event only a few months away. I doubt very much that you'll find anything particularly local to the stadium or along the main beaches from Leblon to Copacobana.
Do you know whether there's a metro station nearby? If so then I'd suggest that you find out the train running times (bearing in mind that they may run later for the games) to see whether you can find accommodation near another station. Perhaps an Airbnb place?
Rio has probably changed a fair bit in the 10 years since I was there but I was told by locals not to wander too far from the beaches, especially at night. Indeed, even at night the beaches were floodlit. Don't let that worry you, though, as I found it to be a reasonably safe place and the security will be massive during the time that you'll be there.0 -
This is something I dare say you should have thought about a long time in advance because history should have told you that getting affordable rooms in an Olympic city will be difficult! I'm assuming you've already tried Air BNB?Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0
