Right. No, they're not "snow tyres". They're summer or winter tyres.

It even says so in nice big letters.

Neilmcl, in Germany, many small village garages store the tyres and wheels that are not in use for the locals, so it is feasible.

When I was also looking for a place in the South that would allow me to rent winter tyres for a couple of weeks and could not find anything nearby.

Sure, any garage can order winter tyres and some garages may even stock winter tyres for sale (you have to bear in mind that some M&S tyres sold in the UK are not acceptable under the german book), but I have not seen a widespread service. All roads are pretty flat around us, so if it ever takes off, it will not start here.

Best if you show the multiple reports you saw that show any tyre can help over a layer of black ice, I will then look up the other one. I made a mental note of it since the forum post where I saw it quoted was pretty clear.

I've never heard of anybody, anywhere RENTing tyres of any kind. I think that might be your problem.

Where garages store wheels/tyres for customers, they are the customer's own wheels and tyres, not the garage's which they rent.

M+S marked tyres are very different to winter tyres. To find a winter tyre, you need to find the mountain-snowflake icon.

All winter tyres will be M+S.
    Not all M+S are winter.

In France, the book says you need to be ready to put the chains on but in most resorts they clear the snow frequently so you do not need them (unless they are fairly worn).
Now I was thinking Austria or Switzerland next year and the winter tyres topic is at the moment making it almost impossible. I live near London...

Addison Lee have put Winter tyres on the Exec fleet for years (E Class) they seem to now be putting All Seasons on the Galaxys, the new Michelin one.

I have used Winters a fair bit and can see why people think they may be a waste of money, especially when they live near or in London.

But they feel more stable and secure in the cold and often wet weather you get early in the morning at this time of year.

    You pays your money etc....-

Though they only actually cost a small amount more.

    Thanks for the pics.

when I searched, I found some people have considered renting snow tyres in the UK for a couple of weeks (I think for reasons similar to mine) but in the end, even if they found some option, they found the cost almost the same as buying them themselves. Not even sure if they considered the cost of changing them, and then back etc.

Hope people do not start storing them all in their gardens as we may start getting mosquito infestations in the summer. :)

You might need to explain that one to me.

Mosquitoes breed in still water that has no predators, tyres are well know for storing rainwater. Temperatures in the summer at least in the South are perfectly fine for mosquitoes.

Yes, I thought that'd be it.

Storing tyres outside will collect some water, yes, but far less surface area than your average waterbutt or any of a dozen other potentials around the average home. You'd also be typically storing them on rims, preferably covered or inside.

Everyone thought (some still do) that RWD cars are rubbish in the snow.
My Imp (RWD, for the youngsters that have never seen one) always did absolutely fine in the snow on its normal tyres. :D

Yes, the rubber on winter tyres is more suitable and perhaps the thread pattern is better as well but mostly it is the deeper thread that makes the difference.
Actually it's the sipes cut into the tyre tread that makes all the difference especially on ice.
