I definately agree with the e numbers and preservatives. After having to kiddies I think thats what pushes me into home baking not the actual cost. I have to admit i do feel alot better knowing exactly what ther eating.March 2014 Grocery challenge £250.000 -
I wouldn't want to eat value baked goods because I don't find it either looks or tastes very nice - not worth the calories! I compare with premium brands because that is more like for like.0

How convenient!I just made some mini lemon sponges earlier (well, more like big muffins!) and costed them. They worked out at 9.3p each (not including gas). However, I do like to be on the slightly more cautious side when costing, so they probably worked out slightly cheaper.
Yes, You probably can buy cheaper than these, but they are delish, and I know exactly what is in them.

I do worry about how long some of the bought stuff keeps! To make hm keep a long time it has to be very high in fat i.e. a madeira cake or a rich fruit cake. This means the bought stuff must have some chemical 'keeping' agent in it.
There are lots of recipes that are cheap to make e.g. raspberry buns, rock cakes, rubbed in fruit cake, that don't cost a lot to make but also don't keep long. They generally have half fat to flour or even less. Also a lot of the recipes in my old book have different fats in them, e.g. lard or even dripping as well as marge or butter.
I remember as a child we never ate butter. It was simply too expensive. My cousin and I were chatting recently about when she and her mum went to Worksop. This was in the late 50's. My aunty would buy 2 oz of butter to take home as a treat. My cousin called it 'stuck up butter'.
Scones can be almost flour, sugar and milk. They are lovely hot out of the oven, but have to be toasted after a few hours.
These recipes are designed to be baked and eaten quickly. Also I think people were more tolerant of cake that was a bit dry.0 -
i agree with other posters that i prefer hm as i know what has gone in them. they are far more filling than shop bought and in our house food doesn't hang round long enough to go off, so not having preservatives isn't a problem. dd has taken over the making of twinks hobnobs, she made 5 batches last fri some for a school cake stall, some for us. kept her and a friend occupied all morning which was another bonus:pLead us not into temptation...

cake that was a bit dry was turned in to trifle!! Now, I didn't grow up on bought biccies etc - we made it or we didnt have any. There was a reason we called my Dad 'the Cookie MOnster'! but for the taste, no comparison - I will sometimes eat bought biccies, but I enjoy homemade that much more. COst can't be the be-all-and-end-all of cooking and baking - it then just becomes an exersise in turning into Scrooge.0

I'm with the others on this I think - I bake because I like to know what is in my food and I don't like most shop bought cake (with the exception of Mr Kiplings Country slices for some reason! :rolleyes: ). Plus I actually enjoy baking.

Sometimes for me its also a means of making stuff I can't buy. I've never found anywhere that sells Kentish apple cake (the sort that is an amporphous crispy sugary blob I remember from home), or the German cornflour based cakes that my OH likes, or the syrup soaked greek-style cakes my best friend used to cook so I make them. And I like merainge (sp?) to be soft in the middle, so I don't buy those either.

Obviously you are all right about knowing what's in your food if you bake it, and TBH we don't need to worry about food lasting as it never lasts that long because someone eats it!
