Home baking?

Is home baking more cost effective than buying cakes, scones etc? I am lanning on making some cheese scones, flapjacks and the hob nob biscuits from here for my husband and son to take to work/school. Does it work out cheaper??

  • There have been a few threads on this and I think the general consensus was - it's not as cheap as buying value - but as the quality is so much better you have to compare them with premium ranges. Plus you know what's in them

  • Yes definately but its best to stick to basic recipes and I dont think they keep quite as well as shop bought so i try not to make too many at once to make sure they all get eaten. I regularly make scones but they need eating asap as they dont keep but to be honest they dissapear straight away, I find shortbread the easist thing to make and it keeps for about a week and its so easy and cheap to make, just butter(Value) castor sugar, plain flour and a bit of corflour. I dont but shop buiscuits any more I just make a batch or shortbread every few days,

I've often wondered that myself. I can buy 10 scones in Mr T or Mr S for 35p. Also, fairy cakes for 50p , 6 jam tarts for 21p and a swiss roll for 15p I surely couldn't make them for that. I know homemade is nicer than the "EConomy" and "value" versions but when you fraction in the cost of ingreedients AND electricity et.c. Would be really interested to know what the real professional OS ladies on here think x

In all honesty I probably have to agree with you .I dont think I could make swiss roll etc for less that 15p, I think Flapjacks and Shortbread work out really cheap but thats because I use everthing tesco value. I think it depends how much you enjoy baking to be honest, I know if i didnt actualy enjoy it I wouldnt do it and i'd buy a 15p swiss roll. Id be interested to here like you what the real professionals think. I think you start a thread!!!!!

    Hi there

I dont find that making your own is always the cheapest, once you have a decent store cupboard built up its easier...

but what i do find is that home made has much more "fill"... if i buy bread i could easily eat 6 slices:o ..hence my joining froggas campaign....hello frogga:D ...but now 2 slices of home made bread is enough for me or a sandwich.. and for me a lot of shop cakes are all airy fairy..... you cant beat a slice of homemade cake...it so much more satisfying than anything i can buy...and you know what is in it.... ok they dont always have a long storage life - but thats because we dont fill them with yuk.... and i have recently found a recipe for a banana ginger cake..that keeps for 2 months in an airtight box.. i must try that recipe one day soon

Yes!!!! Ds1 and I are lactose intolerant, so there is very little we can buy - value digestives/ gingernuts - so for us it does work out cheaper for most things.

Well I'm not a real professional :D but next time have a look on the side of the pkt of swiss roll, fairy cakes etc see if you can work out what's actually in them. Probably lots of numbers & preservatives you've never heard of.

Home baking may not be cheaper in those circumstances you quoted but you definatley know what's in your baking. Flour, sugar, butter, coconut, eggs, milk etc. So to me it's not really if I enjoy baking it's what I want to feed me & my family.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

  • I like knowing what I've put into my food. And TBH you buy a bag of flour, some butter, sugar, eggs & can make loads of stuff.

A basic fairy cake is butter, sugar flour & eggs. I doubt the cakes in the supermarkets just have those basic ingredients. :)
