Finance - address history

I couldn't get a sofa on finance last night because I have lived (continuously) in 4 separate addresses in the last 3 years. Is this true? I know I have to provide a 3 year address history (which I can). Is there anything wrong with it being more than 3 addresses?

Thanks

You only need to provide an address history of financially active addresses. If you've lived somewhere - perhaps for a short time - and not informed creditors, banks and so on (it's a good idea not to if you know it's only short term), then there's no need to list it as an address. However, be careful if you've had redirected mail to any such addresses. Experian implement a legalised hack of the Royal Mail Redirection Database and flag up such addresses against you (NEVER use Royal Mail redirect for this reason).

In your case, perhaps the damage has already been done, and even if you weren't financially active at some of the addresses, it's likely that you now will be. The sofa merchant may well have hit you with an address update on the CRAs' files about you.

living at multiple addresses in a short space of time is an indicator of lack of stability, so some lenders will reject the application.

Also most prime lenders want 3 years traceability on the electoral roll
  • But I was registered on the electoral roll at the 4 different addresses

But 4 addresses in 3 years is quite a lot (in relation to average) and indicates instability.

Have you had a look at your credit file with the 3 reference agencies. It is unusual for a lender to tell you why they decline finance. They usually refer you to a CRA.
