Our 1.6 Astra only does 32mpg over a 10 mile a day commute, mainly 30mph roads with maybe 2/3 miles of 50mph road.

On a 5 mile trip the only vehicle that will get 43mpg is a moped.

Almost all of my journeys are 5 miles, to and from work. Am I entitled to a reduction in RFL now that my Mazda2, which easily exceeds 43mpg, has been reclassified as a moped?
You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.

You really do need to see a psychiatrist as soon as possible bigjl. You appear to be totally fixated on Dark Matter, a practice that can't be healthy.

    Totally untrue!

I have a Mondeo 2.0 TDCI Automatic which averages 43mpg, and on a run at a steady 65 gives me 54mpg.

Even towing a caravan gives 30+ mpg.

If I drive as though I have a glass of water on the bonnet and I don't want to spill any, I can get 60mpg.

The sales man told me I could expect late 30's early 40's, which would be ideal, however, I'm getting low 30's at the very best. .
Can you explain how you calculated you're getting low 30s?

You COULD approach the dealer and ask if you could exchange for something else as it is too thirsty for you. You may loose a few hundred depending on price paid/how long owned - but it may be less than paying extra fuel.

It may have a blocked CAT, or other reasons for poor economy. You could ask the dealer to look at it first to find out if there is any reason why it is thirsty other than the type of vehicle or your journey. In the meantime you can save fuel by block changing gear and using brakes to stop rather than going down the gears - and talking physics here ........don't stop at junctions. Approach slowly and keep wheels turning even very slowly. Most effort is in pulling away.

Wifes 2.2 pt cruiser took here 26 miles to work and back every day and she would put in £30 a week to comfortably do so. They do around 40mpg average.

Have a word with the dealer, let him know you are struggling and he may take his reputation seriously enough to help out and keep you as a loyal customer as well as your friends.

Seen cars returned for stranger reasons......guy returned one to a friends garage as his wife disliked the colour!

Sounds a similar drive to mine then, maybe I was just hoping for a bit too much.

Thanks, I think I may go down the route of getting it checked by an independent, then if anything shows up, can go back to the dealer.

These readings are useful as a rough guide, but have a reputation for not being very accurate.

I'm looking at spending about £40 a week to cover the 50 miles

Take it to a local garage as something isn't right, 5.62 mpg isn't normal for a 1.6 Astra.
