looks fantastic
but they probably had to wait 5 years for a clear day to take the photos0 -
100% the west country. Property is still reasonably priced, people are friendly and trusting and there is beautiful countryside right on your doorstep.0

Let's not recommend places out in the sticks.
The OP wants to be near, if not actually within urban areas with shopping, entertainment, and the other benefits of a city. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
I'm north Leeds and love it. Not far from the city (and it is a proper city too) and great for countryside. It's pretty affluent, but there are some cheaper areas where you could get something around the 300k mark. (Have a look at Guiseley or Rawdon)
If a small city would do, maybe try looking near Hull or Sheffield? They are a lot cheaper than Leeds.
Harrogate is gorgeous but expensive, but there are villages further out (between Harrogate and York) that are a bit more affordable...0 -
Well for £300.000 to spend what about splitting this money over two properties, Northern Ireland just a 30 minute flight to Liverpool and you can get decent places for £100 - £150.000 and then look at a warm climate for a apartment that you get to quick for weekend and longer retreats.0

Avoid the west coast if you don't like rain. I recommend Edinburgh. Super fast broadband, could probably get a fairly nice apartment with a sea view for that kind of money, and a bus service to die for. Plenty of sunshine, and we only have pretend rain if you buy close enough to the coast.
Beware the snow line. I would recommend having a good look at the north side before doing what most incomers do, buying on the south side. Snow: Lovely to look at, lovely to see, but not outside my front door please. I thought it didn't snow over winter the first two winters we were here, until I drove 7 miles south, to Dalkeith, and it looked like Canada on a winter's day.0 -
You could do a lot worse than buy my 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom double garage detached house 30 minutes north of Inverness for under £300K0
