MoneySaving Poll: Should Sunday be like any other shopping day?

Comments

  • All day Sunday shopping may initially be attractive, but it is the consumer who pays the additional costs of wages and overheads for the convenience. This coupled with additional transport provision for workers, can only send the cost of living upwards.
I am not against restricted Sunday shopping, but at the end of the day there is only one cake, so spreading it across 7 days instead of six will not increase trade, but higher prices instead.
A typical example is convenience stores operated by the big supermarkets, where prices are significantly higher than mainstream stores.

Not been civilised for long.... I remember when nothing opened on Sundays, even pubs and they closed at 6pm in the week!:j
Mind you, it was nearly as bad in Australia and New Zealand.... yes I am old :A

Yes if the shops are granted longer hours, then frequency of public transport needs to be on the same frequency as Mon-Sat

Working in food retail, I've experienced both working in restricted and non restricted shops. When working the non restricted stores, I found I barely saw friends and family for months on end as they have weekend's off and I worked them. During the restricted shops, I had the opportunity to spend an evening with them.
I also found that when stores are open bank holidays, customers are still, the majority of the time, treating stores as though they're on Sunday trading, and we've been doing this for some years. The same still applies when we extended our hours during the Olympics.
This may be different if the store is in a much more populated area, but as we're situated in a more commuter based town, I doubt extended hours would make much difference, but if passed, we will be made to open any way, for convenience purposes.
We have much "on tap" now that I feel that if you can't go an evening without shopping, there's something wrong. Gone will be the days of spending time together and just communicating through the internet.

Relax the 6-hour restriction to say a 9-hour opening restriction within a 12 hour window (08:30 to 20:30).
  • Hi all, I wonder if anyone realy asks the staff if they want to work longer on a Sunday. I can tell you I don't, and am not alone in this view. I retired 5yrs ago and because I was still fit and healthy I got a job at a local supermarket, 16 hr a week fri/sat one week sat/sun next. I enjoy it but Sunday's now well the Sunday trade is not as busy so less staff the only thing I don't do is sweep the floor. I start at 8am finish at 9pm this is to tidy up before and aft he opening. Before as the night shift shelf fill all night (now that is a hard job) and they leave boxes on the floor so that it can be checked to keep stock levels ok. This does take me yes it usely is only me on a sun 2hrs to get shop floor ready for customers. I would like to know where the money is coming from to buy more products when everyone is struggling. The people who want longer hrs should work in a shop for mimium wage and the agro you get from them.

I live in Scotland, we are civilised here and the shops are already open on Sundays.

I live in NI , we are more civilised , the big multinationals are open 1-5pm, local stores don't open

We still have family lives :)
  • I am 100% against this latest idea of Georgie Porgie Pudding & Pie because our politicians are paid by the big companies, who in turn, pay no tax.

Think of the people who have to work first, their families, their kids and how little they see of their parents already. That is why our fabric of society is breaking down because our politicians have it all set up for the big money making non tax paying sh-t of society who have spent decades ruining the UK.

Do not allow this to happen - be against Sunday trading and do not shop on a Sunday if you can avoid it.

Think of the families who suffer - like Next opening their sales at 5am, think of the poor staff and refuse to go, I do.
