I live in a building that has been converted into three flats. My upstairs neighbour who I scarcely know has retired to the country hundreds of miles away but has kept the flat on and is renting it out as an Airbnb unit. I am pretty sure this contravenes the building rules on multiple occupancy and short term rentals but before I go down that route and engender the inevitable ill feeling, I wonder if anyone could advise whether giving a procession of strangers the keys to our communal front door could compromise our communal building insurance and/or our individual contents insurances even though the rest of us are playing entirely by the rules? Also as I now know about this (I found out by accident they didn't tell me) do I have a responsibility to inform my insurers/building manager.

Has no affect on your individual flat Insurances, but whoever manages the flats and block Insurance should be informed of any change of usage. There could well be conditions in the lease and insurance that excludes short term letting.
Contact whoever deals with managing the flats on behalf of the freeholders. The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0
