Buy a USB drive of sufficient capacity. Connect drive to PC. Copy files and photos to USB drive.

That's the short version. Ask here if you need/want more detail.

What would the sufficient capacity be? I don't have loads of files or photos. Thanks.

If your photos are in one folder, Right Click the folder >> Properties >> Size on the disk.

For small amount a USB pen drive will suffice.

HUKD: Integral 128GB Courier USB Flash Drive £17.99 Delivered @ mymemory
Smaller capacity will be cheaper (~ proportionally).

Go into the folders where the files and photos you want to back up are located.

If you want to copy a whole folder, right-click on it and click Properties. this will give you a figure, such as 432Mb, 100Kb, something like that.

If you want to copy a number of files within a folder, select them, then right-click again to get size from properties

Add all the sizes up, add an allowance for adding more in the future, and buy a drive bigger than this.

If EVERYTHING you want to copy is on your My Documents folder, just right-click this and read off the size.

Here's how you add up the Kb and Mb to get a Tb....

For all the cost involved, get at least a 1TB external HDD, then you won't run out of storage. Ebuyer do one for about £40, we have one on my wife's laptop, it's USB powered so comes on whenever the laptop is switched on, plus I think there's a backup program within Vista so you can set it up to automatically backup every day, week or whatever suits you.

if you have photos on your desktop they are already backed up if you still have the originals on your camera/phone

best 'offsite' free photo backup is google photos imho. just install on pc
