Help with choosing a bed- are sprung slats worth it?

I have a metal bed frame with a medium/soft mattress but I've always found it far too hard. From what I've read, having sprung slats would be softer and they should be no more than 3 inches apart. Mine are solid metal and 6 inches apart.

I've noticed that beds with sprung slats are much more expensive. Does it really make a huge difference having sprung slats? Most beds seem to just have solid ones. I'm confused about whether to replace the bed with another that has slats closer together, replace with one with sprung slats or just replace the mattress.

My bed is on standard wooden slats and are approx. 2 inch apart from each other, It did cost a lot to buy but I went with a really good mattress as you spend a lot of time in bed so want it to both last and be comfy.
