VT and I got these last year reduced to silly money. If it works on a comparison I could do with a couple more.. Having a Starbucks with DH at the moment, but going back into A in a minute so if I can find, I will try.

Calling all cruisers, having never done a cruise myself before I have decided me and mrs99p are definitely going on one this year. I have chosen a P & O cruise from and returning to Southampton. I'm thinking we will get an inside cabin because the cost for a balcony seems crazy.
Can anyone give me any advice on where is a good cheap place to stay for one night in Southampton ?
Can anyone give me any cruise advice or top tips ?
TIA
It depends on if you are getting to Southampton in the car or the train.
If you are going down in the car there are a few hotels that do cruise and stay packages eg stay the night before possibly with dinner, bed for the night, breakfast and then your car stays on the car park for the week or fortnight, they taxi you to the port and back. I am thinking Eastleigh but I can't think of the hotel chain now but google should help - get quotes from several as some don't include dinner.
If you are coming down on the train - make sure you book your train seats at the same time and its cheapest to book tickets 12 weeks in advance so keep checking for when your service becomes book able - also use the split ticket website .
Hotels - there is nothing wrong whatsoever in staying at Etap budget. It has good showers, wi fi and its a bed for the night and about 5 minites walk from the station and shops - don't forget TCB.
We tend to stay at Premier inn West Quay and by checking the website and booking months ahead the last few times we have got our room for £39. Again this is close to the station and shops.
There is another Premier inn slightly further out and a new Travelodge which might also be worth trying. There is also Jurys Inn, Holiday Inn, Grand Harbour and numerous b & b and boutique places to suit all budgets
We always go down the night before as its 4 hours on the train for us so its worth the cost if a hotel room not to have to worry about travelling down on embarkation day.
Dinner - masses of choice where to eat but we tend to go to ikea as its a novelty for us
Brrakfast - Ikea do breakfast but its grim, usually its Greggs and we eat it in the park
Taxis - we tend to walk from the station as the taxi drivers hate the short hope to the hotel. We book the taxi from the hotel to the port the night before as often they get very busy - about £7 depending on your hotel.
If you live within a couple if hours of Southampton so you can go down on the day it saves a lot of time and money - otherwise if you live further out you have to factor in your hotel stay, dinner, breakfast, train fare/taxis or petrol/parking.
Yes it does sound a bit penny pinching but we like to spend our money when we are away rather than the day before“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. Every day will allow you, --will invite you to add something to the pleasure of others, --or to diminish something of their pains.”0 -
Hello, lovely Elite
I hope you're all having a good weekend.
I remember someone here was planning a hen do, saw this and thought it might be useful http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00VVD0ISY0 -
I THINK he's saying that if you need a 5p bag you should get a waitrose magazine too because that will more than pay for it
Eg if you get a large coffee and magazine it "costs" £3.65, but you pay 30p
The 10% card takes 37p off your shopping so you would be 7p up
Buying a carrier bag for 5p still leaves you up by 2p
I know zippy said 3p but what's 1p amongst friends?
i get the 10p bags in my waities :rotfl:
but yes you got the gist of what im on about.0 -
Hi Mhoc - theres the Peacock at Owler bar which does good food and it's one where you can convert your tesco club card vouchers on . Theres also a crown carveries on the same roundabout which is quieter than a toby carvery and decent food - hope that helpsAfternoon all
A question for anyone who lives in or near Dronfield or Chesterfield, that sort of area - any good suggestions for evening meals on a Sunday, well early evening ????
We don't need anything sophisticated like fine dining. OH has had man flu all week so he is barely eating plus we have picnic lunch which usually leaves you do full for most of the day afterwards
I found just the right sort of place in Dronefield called The Hub and it looked perfect but its not open on Sunday
Our other option is Toby Carvery but they don't take any vouchers on Sunday eg the 2 courses for £6.99 offer is not valid so we will end up paying that for one course and anyway Toby Carvery on a Sunday is bursting with people. Carveries suit OH the carnivore and I suffer them but don't really enjoy the food.
But if I can't think of anything else it will have to be Toby Carvery.
I know if we go further into Sheffield there is every possible food outlet but as we are on the road for a good few hours we don't want to venture into a city that we don't know.
We are going to Hardwick Hall national trust place in the afternoon and staying at Double Tree Sheffield park so somewhere between or close to these 2 would be ideal.
(Using my Hilton points up before anyone thinks I've acquired ideas about my station)

The Donkey Derby Flaming Grill in Chesterfield, Sheffield Road, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, S41 8LS has a 40% voucher on the website valid till next Wed. A few of the FG pubs are participating in this, I was at one this lunch for a meal. Just print off the voucher. I have never been to this FG but have been to several and they have a good menu. Don't think they serve donkey, even if it falls at the first fence!!Snootchie Bootchies!0 -
