Measuring carpets

We need new carpets for our 3 bedrooms plus landing and stairs. To keep costs down I'd like to buy remnants and have them fitted, but I've never measured for carpets before. How much should I add to each dimension to allow proper fitting? Also, when calculating underlay, how much do I deduct to allow for gripper rods etc?

  • Just measure the area and give it to the shop, no need to add or deduct anything.

Why not ask the shop to measure and let them tell you what roll ends and offcuts are suitable with a subsequent store visit?

Don't forget to measure into doorways (to the edge of the current carpet).

The shop didn't have many remnants, I'll be sourcing them on eBay, so I felt it was a bit rude to make use of their free measuring service with no intention of buying from them.

You could try your honest approach with them: "I don't want to just use your free measuring service, then run and buy remnants from the internet, but I was going to buy remnants like XXX... Any chance you can roughly meet that price?"

They may well be able to price your job with remnants that never find their way to the shop floor.
