    Tbh, for what you need to do you will probably find it quicker and easier to do it by hand. You are only trying to make a key for the new paint.

    Had the same problem when I first moved into my property (although we had a few less spindles!)

    I didn't even think about it, I just sanded down the rough areas by hand a little and then painted a satin paint for wood on top. I got it for Homebase but have no idea what make it was. Did the job and now looks lovely!
