Recommend A Bandwidth Monitor for WLAN please

Hi,

I would be extremely grateful if someone could recommend a bandwidth monitor which will accurately record bandwidth sent over WLAN. I have been using DUMeter successfully on a wired connection but it leaves a lot to be desired on on WLAN settings.

For instance last night it said this months bandwidth usage has been 4.08GBS (had backups to download to a new machine), yet today it says that I have used 1.80GBS this month.

It's annoying and irritating and I'd just like to be able to monitor how much bandwidth I am using as my ISP don't make that information readily available so I don't get any unexpected surprises when it comes to billing time every month.

    Netgear DG834G is the router.

I've downloaded and run those files but I don't understand how that is monitoring any throughput whatsoever. It isn't actually giving me anything other than the stats that I can access from the router login page anyway and they're reset every reboot or every time the connection is automatically resynched for a more optimum performance.

Could you explain how I can use that tool to keep an eye on how many GBS I am downloading every month?

Aye that's no good I'm afraid, I like to run my router as close as possible to optimum conditions which means that if the noise level drops below 4dB I reboot, otherwise I could be waiting 20seconds or so for a page to load. The router is also partial to resetting the connection and resynching all by itself from time to time also.

    Thanks for trying though.

Seems that you're not alone with this router resetting: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/486501.html there seem to be some possible solutions to this incorporating third party firmwares here: http://www.galliford.org/dg834g/

This program seems to answer your original question however, regarding the monitoring of wlad traffic: http://www.tamos.com/products/commwifi/

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

    Thanks ABH.

re Router Resetting, I actually like this bug because it only seems to happen when my noise is at such a low level that surfing is extremely slow, it often reboots with a lower synch speed and a better noise level on the line for surfing. I have had a quick look at the page you linked to though and have bookmarked it for future reference should I ever feel brave enough to try something like that.

    re the monitor.

Again thank you, I have bookmarked the page for the future.

Since my last posting I have discovered Netlimiter ( http://www.netlimiter.com/featurelist.php )
, who offer a free monitoring tool if you're not wanting the shaping features which I most certainly don't, (if I wanted those then I'd go with an ISP who actively shape your account).

I'm trialling their monitor at the moment and it seems to be doing the job but of course 3 hours or so it not going to provide anything like a reliable test.

Hopefully I can save myself 100quid on the tamos monitor using this free one but if it proves to be useless, I now have a bookmark to get a product straight away.

    Much appreciated :)

So what is you best noise figure then? Sounds like you have other problems that need looking into!

The best noise level is 6dB with a line attenuation of 36dB.

Depending on changes in the atmospheric conditions it can vary a hell of a lot between 7dB and 0dB, I like to keep it 5 or 6 so that I get the speediest loading of pages possible, that's all.

It's one of the perils of having an overhead line I suppose but at 3.6kms from the exchange (line length), a synch speed of between 8128 and 6992 and a throughput of hardly ever below 580kB/sec, (more usually 650+) who am I to complain? lol!
