swapping sealed units

I know you can replace sealed units on double glazing (though our new ones look so much wider, I do wonder how they fit into the windows).
Is it possible to retain sealed units and replace the frame and sorround?
We have some windows that are only 2 years old made of wood. We are not very happy with the maintenance of the wood - already very scratched and the seal is not perfect, already a small drought. We only bought this house a year ago, so have no warranty on them. As they were part of an extension there is no separate FENSA certificate as they are included in the the final building regs certificate for the extension.
The sealed units are fine, but we would like to replace the wooden frame and with upvc. The firm currently upgrading our other windows (from single glazed rotton wood to upvc) says this is not possible. Just wanted to check.

You could get a local company to make a new frame to your sizes and specification, and double glazed units from 2 years ago should fit. I can't see any economic reason for it though
I can't see why any timber frame could not be sanded and repainted.
As a guide, trade prices in the Midlands for a standard 1800x1200 frame, glazed with two openers is around £200. For a 1200 x 1050 one its about £140. Or just look at the Wickes website or local store. Fitting should be about £50 per frame0 -
May not be economic but the maintenance would be lower and the seal onthe openers would be tighter. Current frame has deep scratches from previous owner's wild dog.
Will ask the double glaziers when they come on Weds the exact reason why they say it can't be done.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
