Line rental

Hi, I always pay my line rental for the year up front to get the discount but this year I've been asked for £194 from BT. This seems steep but I guess I need it even if I scrap the landline which we hardly use because we need it for the internet. I am also paying on average £40 a month for the phone, internet and basic BT TV package which we don't need now we've upgraded to a smart TV. Is there any drawback to scrapping the landline? Will it cost us extra if we want a landline again at a later date?

If you scrap the landline how are you going to access a broadband service . ?? likewise BT TV or WiFi for your smart tv.
Alternatives are mobile dongle for data or a satellite connection .

You could switch providers. There's no need to stay with BT now the line rental saver period has finished.

I pay a lot less with another provider (TalkTalk) for more than what you are getting.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

But changing providers is not scrapping the land line .
OP needs to decide what they want first .
BT TV / BT Sport required ??
BT basic TV is still £0 per month .

How long left on your broadband contract likewise your TV contract .

Thanks for the replies. Phoned BT who say it will cost me £357 to get out of my contract before June 2017. I will definitely be changing then.

You can't really scrap the landline. You can stop using your landline telephone number, but that doesn't cost you anything anyway. The landline will still be needed for broadband unless you go for the dongle option or cable tv possibly - depends on provider. £40 a month sounds a lot - I pay £26 a month through PlusNet for phone, BB, and anytime calls, and just use Freeview through the tv. Not sure what basic BT tv includes, but Netflix, Amazon, Sky Now etc. are all under £10 each for extra entertainment content through the smart tv.
