I will be having a new central heating boiler fitted under the eco scheme, and have been told that it would be cheaper to install in a different place because at present the boiler is in the middle of my bungalow with a flue through the roof. The surveyer from 1Greenplace said that the flue also needs replacing, plus would need scaffolding thus costing considerably more.

To have boiler fitted at the front of the house which would have a flue on outside wall, which is including in original costs, there is then extra cost for new pipes to route to rads etc. Have been quoted an extra £650 for this extra work.

My question is firstly, is it a legal requirement for scaffolding for a bungalow room (not massively high, but is pitched), and would the cost of a new flue and scaffolding really cost more than £650.
I'm more concerned about new pipes running round the rooms, and the disruption caused by resiting of boiler than the actual extra costs. Any reviews on 1GreenPlace please

Another point to consider, access to roof would be from my internal courtyard, therefore would not see how scaffolding would be fitted. Plus, the removal of the original flue would require the roof to be fixed (which will be for me to get done, but need my gully/boxed gutters renewing anyway so thats ok, but would the roof people need to erect scaffolding?

Sorry for 'War and Peace', but continually feel ripped off. When I had my last boiler installed, I was charged an extra £350 for new 22ml pipes, as old ones were a bit thinner, but only realised a year or so later that they didn't actually do that work. Also at the time of this work, they broke a couple of my roof tiles, gaffer taping them up, was not amused, rain poured through the roof to Nicky's bedroom. This was rectified by the Heating company thankfully, but the installers who had seemed really nice at the time were dishonest.

I am grateful that the cost is so much less than the full cost, and I will be having a Worcester, which I am led to believe is a quality boiler ....... Thanks for reading (if you managed to get this far without dropping off to sleep) xxx

1Greenplace seems to be one of these companies dealing with enegy efficiency grants. They are probably the ones who cold call touting for business. How did you come to use them?

It is common stipulation that if the boiler cannot be located in the same place as the old one, extra costs will come into play which you may have to pay for. Scaffolding, may indeed be a requirement for roof work, even if it is a bungalow. If it is a nation wide company (large company rather than sole trader), they seem to be bound my more strict health and safety laws.

The only way to be sure if the move of the boiler location move is required is to get a second opinion. This would mean asking a loal gas safe engineer to come out and give thier opinion. Explain the situation, as they are unlikley to get any work from you, they may be willing to take a look.

However, if their advice seems logical and the boiler is poorly place at the moment, it may be the best thing to do.

So you just have to decide whether to go ahead or not.

How old is your current boiler?

Nowadays a lot of firms won't contemplate any sort of work on a roof unless there's proper scaffolding. They'll just cite Health & Safety and there's not a lot you can do except find someone else who is happy to work on a roof without scaffolding.

I don't know how old or what type of boiler you've got but you'll have to have a condensing boiler unless there are overwhelming reasons why you can't. That means that a condensate drain needs to be installed and the flue might be different.

Any boilers supplied under a grant scheme will generally have a relatively fixed basic cost for the boiler & installation and anything even slightly non-standard will cost extra.

As said, it's up to you to decide whether you are prepared to pay for it - you cannot demand that they do it
