Help me understand how TV works these days!

I've been with Virgin for broadband, tv and sky sports, getting on for 15 years now. I'm now paying over 1k per year and can't help the feeling I'm getting ripped off.
So, I was looking for alternatives but I don't really understand all these different ways of getting tv these days. On my LG tv, if I change the input thing from HDMI to Antenna there's a load of channels there, including some I had no idea I could get! (such as RT). Are these channels this Freeview thing? Or just regular, broadcast TV? Is there a difference?
If I cancelled Virgin completely, I'm thinking I could just get a cheap internet only deal from someone, but then could I get sky sports somehow?
Any help much appreciated!

Best thing to do is tell virgin you are leaving because of price, have in mind what you want to pay, and hopefully they will come down in price.0

You can have all the Freeview or Freesat channels for no cost whatsoever, other than the one off cost of a dish or aerial if required. If you want subscription channels such as Sky Sports then you have to pay.
Antenna means aerial, so the channels you get that way are all Freeview ones (there is no other terrestial based 'broadcast' TV. Freesat is essentially the same (or very similar) free channel line up delivered by satellite. No free lunch, and no free laptop
