If it turns out later on that he does leave a bit of an estate/money after all, you can donate it back to the hospital that paid for his funeral.

The hospital or the council will claim any money that is left, up to the amount that was spent on the funeral.

Thank you everyone for your help and advice, it has certainly eased my mind at a difficult time.

Once again thank you everyone, my brother has now died and the funeral has passed. Matters were complicated by the fact that he had no address of his own but was living with a friend but all that is done with now.
