Is it worth having a landline?

Ever since we got our first flat in 2008 we've had a landline and use it on the rare occasion, as I'm sure most others do almost all our calls are done on the mobile.
We're currently with Sky and renew at the end of each period to continuously pay an offer amount (Or as I call it, avoid paying the "Not in a contract" tax). It's around £45 a month and is reasonable. As the broadband for Sky goes through the telephone line we have to pay line rental and have the telephone.
We receive offers all the time for Virgin and have used them before with no complaints. Their offers look great however if we are willing to drop the phone line I estimate we could save about £10-£15 a month as Virgin doesn't require the telephone line to be active for broadband. I'm weighing this up as an option given how little we use the landline.
Have many other people done the same? Things like schools and such call our mobile now - I'm not sure what value there is in keeping our landline. Are there any negatives I haven't thought of?
Cheers,
Chib.

Broadband = landline or cable .
Or over the air via mobile .
Are you sure you will will find saving using VM no line rental option .0 -
If you give up your landline and move to Virgin it will limit possibilities if you want to move again and then incur a charge to install a new line.0

Although you can get Virgin media broadband without 'line rental' the stand alone broadband is £30.25 / month (50 Mb ) your Sky line rental and broadband together probably costs less than this.., I'm guessing the £45 you pay Sky includes TV, obviously there may be introductory offers that bring the VM price down below that for a period of time but I'm not sure you can get just broadband and TV from VM without also bundling line rental, and if you just want broadband I don't think they budge from the £30.250

I pay £17.70 line rental to TalkTalk and that includes free broadband so yes it's worth it to pay for a landline. You don't have to use the phone if you don't wish to. The broadband uses the line so you need to pay for the line.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Given the Sky Anytime inclusive allowance includes an unlimited number of calls to geographic numbers starting 01 & 02, non-geographic numbers starting 03 and mobile numbers starting 071-075 & 077-079 - the same as your mobile, but for far less money per month - why not start using your landline more and reduce the calls allowance on your mobile to cover only those calls you make while you are away from home?0
