Matlock, west of Chesterfield, Buxton?

Anyone know these areas well?

I'm changing my search area from south Stockport and more over to the Peak District and the areas above and round by there.

Any plus or minus points?

I know Buxton well, but it really depends what you're looking for an whether you're wanting a commutable property (and if so, where to). Buxton is a nice town - it has the same issues as anywhere else but you've got a good combination of reasonable schools, pretty good access to Manchester, shops and leisure facilities, and of course you're on the borders of the National Park so you've got really easy access to some of the most beautiful parts of the country (I will admit I'm biased :)). However, there are parts of the town that aren't great - like Fairfield - and like any small touristy town, finding good, well-paid, non-seasonal work can be problematic depending on your industry. House prices rise dramatically the further you go out of the town and the more you head into the National Park (along with the other downsides of rural living).

If you've been looking at Stockport and you're now looking a bit further out, have you looked at places like Hayfield, New Mills, Marple, Disley, Whaley Bridge, Glossop? It depends what you want (rural, village, town etc etc) but there's a pretty good choice round there.

Sorry, but your title instantly reminded me of the film, "Krakatoa, East of Java."

At least you have your geography correct.

    Krakatoa is west of Java.

Dave you do make me chuckle!

Callie, that's just the sort of info i need, thank you.

I work from home so can go anywhere where there is a decent internet connection. I have family Stockport way, so commutable to there is good. I might revisit Offerton again, bits of that seem to be ok, I know someone in Marple and that seems nice too.

i'll also look at those other places you mention.

    Thank you

Matlock is a beautiful place, expensived housing compared to other local areas. It's about twenty minutes to chesterfield so maybe 25 minutes to M1. Where would you be intending to commute to? I'm assuming Manchester, I would say it's do-able my only concern would be winter time I think, when the roads have a tendency to block up. The snake and possibly woodhead are closed today for example which will put extra strain on cat & fiddle.

(Reading that to myself now that just sounds like I'm on a trip, promise I am not!) xxx

    Hello Annie,

i don't have to commute anywhere Mon-Fri as I work from home.

Someone told me today that around Buxton gets rammed with tourists in summer and so moving around can be difficult. Also round now when there is snow about, they tend to get lumped on in that respect.

    Been round Marple area today.

It depends on how often you plan to see your family? Friends of mine live near Matlock and work from home, lovely village, very nice people, the area is stunningly beautiful but can of course get very snowy in winter. On our one day of snow yesterday, Manchester was still (mostly) fine, but passes across the Pennines were closed - they usually are when it snows, so it may be tough getting to Stockport in winter. Marple might be a nice compromise - did you like it?

Northeast Manchester / towards Calderdale is significantly cheaper, one reason (of many) why I preferred moving there, you do get more for your money as soon as you are outside of the Peak District, but the area can still be rather stunning.

It all depends on your budget and priorities for housing in those areas.

I work in Matlock and across the Derbyshire Dales and Peak District area. Location wise, its beautiful, no doubt about that. However, public transport can be ropey in some areas. Large supermarkets are prevalent in and around Chesterfield, but Sainsburys and Coop are about your lot in Matlock and surrounding. Dont forget too that you dont get much for your money.

If you have a car and are willing to travel then you should be ok.

If you want any advice on specific areas, please feel free to PM me

Buxton never really gets that busy - you do get tourists in the summer but never really to the point where the roads are gridlocked! Bakewell on market day is worse :) The main road into Buxton can be slow but it's always been that way. Buxton does get the odd bit of weather but again, I've never known it be so bad that you're completely stuck in. You do get the occasional bad day but I was speaking to my parents today (they live out beyond Buxton) and the weather is nowhere near as bad as it's been reported. I agree it would be a pain if you're having to commute but if you're working from home, it shouldn't really be a concern.

Marple is nice, Marple Bridge is lovely, or if you don't mind a little further out then I'd definitely have a look at New Mills and Hayfield. I think New Mills is probably cheaper than Marple (in general) but Hayfield can be pricey. Disley is nice, but again it's generally pricier, as are places like High Lane and Hazel Grove. You've got quite a few nice places along the A6 which will give you easy access to Stockport.
