Outside of house looking grubby

Hi there

My house is 5 yrs old and is the outside is brick on the bottom and then the top floor is cream coloured cement stuff with little stones pressed in.

In patches it is looking quite grubby.

How would I clean it ?

I am worried about anything rough as the stones do come off

and of course, it it going to be expensive /

cheers

  • The "cream coloured cement stuff " is render or tyrolean and needs to be painted every 5-10 years.

A paint coating is part of the waterproofing and protection.

You can wash it in the meantime with a hose (avoid a strong jet wash), but if the pait is wearing, then you need to paint it with a sutable, quality exterior grade paint
  • Thanks for the info, just one question (blonde). The little stones have no paint on them at the moment. Do you mean I would need to paint over them or paint then get new stones out on ?

    Cheers
  • It would be unusual for the render to have been applied and painted and then the stones pressed in afterwards

The stones are mixed into the render when it is applied to provide enhanced weather protection. They will gradually fall out over the life of the render, and paint wil wear off them first. You do not replace them.

The whole surface is painted - as per the instructions on whichever paint you buy.

Possibly could be a render & pebbledash effect & hasn't been painted, before.

It might be possible to use a patio cleaner type product, then you wouldn't need to re-paint. You COULD coat with water repellent (transparent) product. This would be easilly brushed on, if it was really needed. But more than likly it wouldn't be required, unless always getting lots water there - splashed from the roof/road, perhaps.

Any chance of a foto - that'd be easier to see whats what!

  • Yes, it sounds as if it's unpainted, but then it's hard to imagine why it's looking grubby. The pebble dash on my house is over 80 years old, unpainted & looks fine. Can you get a pale colour which could've been put in the original base mix?
