Is there such a thing as a MATURE STUDENT ACCOUNT?

Options
Hello. I'm returning to study in October and have been sent a load of flyers telling me about the joys of freshers week (dressing up in PJs during the day, getting drunk and snogging as many people as possible). However, I am now a 'mature student' and whilst I might be less inclined to take part in some areas of student life (erm, wearing PJs?!) I would love to take advantage of a student bank account and some of the discounts available as I will have a very small budget to live off.

Can anyone recommend a bank that allows mature students onto it's student accounts? (I already have a first degree but I'm going back to do a 1 yr FE course). Thanks. :money:

  • I went to uni as a mature student and Barclays let me have a student account, and my partner (also a mature student) got one too. There isn't (as far as I know) an account specifically for mature students, we just got the ordinary 'student and graduate' accounts. I know quite a few mature students and they've all managed to get 'student' accounts without a problem. Best thing to do is go into the bank and ask,

Hi OP, a letter from your uni saying you are a student will be enough to get a student account I'm sure. Barclays let me keep my student account on production of a letter saying I was still doing a post-grad course.

  • Keoki, you can't get a student account unless you're in Further or Higher Education.
  • Thanks Gingernutmeg. I will call Barclays tomorrow. Meanwhile I will continue to spend a few more hours filling out the endless forms for the Career Development Loans in case that helps.

    Hi
I am about to sign up for a Bookkeeping course which is distance learning.

Does that make me a student and can I get any student benefits?

    I am 34 years old.

Also anyone know if I could get any sort of grant to help with the course fee?

Sorry to sound vague, I just dont want to miss out if I can get some free stuff!!!

Thanks to anyone who helps me ;)

  • I think you need to be a full time student to get any student accounts etc - there should be grants/loans available to you tho, a lot of these are able to be applied for via the company/institution providing your course, if not, look at the student pages on www.direct.gov.uk :)
