Gas fire 'obsolete' - repair options?

My father-in-law has a Flavel Emberglow gas fire on which the ignition switch has stopped working. He asked a local gas service chap to look at it, and was told that it was an obsolete model so parts were no longer available. I've called Flavel with the model number and they have confirmed that they no longer supply parts for it.
I have read that with old boilers, generic parts can often be installed if the manufacturer stops supplying their own, and wondered if there might be a similar situation here.
My father-in-law is in his 80s and doesn't agree with throwing things out which could be repaired, nor with spending hundreds on a replacement fire!
Any advice which you could offer would be appreciated. Thank you!

I use matches on my gas fire. Would that be possible?
Edit: Just found this. Any help?

Just because Flavel don't supply parts for it doesn't mean that they aren't available.

You have to remember that a lot of appliance manufacturers use parts bought-in from companies that specialise in those parts, so you might find that the ignitor unit from your Flavel may be still in production and in use in othe fires and such like.Never Knowingly Understood.

You could do with trying to find out the manufacturer part no for the part required and then google it. There will be many websites who sell parts which will come up. You just then have to click and see if they have them in stock. I sell loads of Valor fires and you can still get parts for some of them over 30 years old, via this way, even Ebay sells the parts.
They still make the Emberglow, but most likely yours is an old engine.0
