Sorry if this has already been posted, I did look but couldn't see it anywhere.
sse currently have an offer for annual boiler cover with a service and initial check up. If you sign up before 31st March 2016 you get the first 6 months free. Then it's £12.40 a month for the remaining 6 months on the flexi plan.
If you do this via quidco then you get £60 cashback. It does say on quidco that it's £14.40 a month but when you click on the link to be directed to the sse website it's only £12.40 a month.
I was worried that I would not get cover on a 16 year old boiler so I phoned sse and they confirmed there was no restriction on the age of the boiler. If you take the flexi plan like me then there is a £50 call out charge, but £14.40 for a year wouldn't even get you a service on a boiler.

There will be a clause in the contract that says they won't repair if it's 'Beyond economic repair' or if parts aren't readily available from their normal supplier, in which case they will probably give you£200 towards a new one. If your boiler is that old, there is a chance they would just call it BER and write it off. I don't know how you would check this, but as you say the first year is worth it just for the service.0

I suspect the chance of a 16 year old boiler passing the 'initial check up', without the need for expensive 'repairs' would be low.
The bottom line, as indicated above, is firms don't want to 'insure' 16+year boilers.
I am a little confused as to costs. You firstly state 'first 6 months free. Then it's £12.40 a month for the remaining 6 months on the flexi plan'. i.e. £74.40
Later you state 'but £14.40 for a year wouldn't even get you a service on a boiler.'0 -
Cardew - it's £74-40 for the year, less the £60 cashback gives the £14-40 for the first year.0
