Npower problems

Options
Admittedly I ran into problems a few years ago and was behind with my gas and electric payments to Npower. In January 2015 I came home to find 2 men in my home fitting prepayment meters. I regularly topped up both meters thinking I was working towards paying off the debt and paying for what I used. In June 2015 I received a letter saying that despite then contacting me on several occasions my account was still in arrears. I contacted them to say I had prepayment meters and was told they would look at my account.

I continued to top up my prepayment meters but in December 2015 I came home to find a letter from them again about the outstanding balance and their intention to apply for a Warren of entry to fit prepayment meters!!!

I put in a complaint and in January they sent a letter saying they were sorry and acknowledged that I did indeed already have prepayment meters and there had been a delay in updating the prepayment meter details on their system and they would be investigating.

At the end of January I received another letter from them and the outstanding balance has doubled. I have been in touch again with them by email but they do not answer them, I have phoned and been on hold then got no answers. I get the odd letter to say they are looking into my account and my complaint is still open.

Last week I got a nice letter from Wescot Credit Services demanding payment or Npower would have to fit prepayment meters!! They have also phoned me three times but have missed their calls.

I have again emailed Npower but not had a reply. It is a nightmare and I'm at a loss as to how I can sort it. When they fitted the prepayment meters last year I thought that was the end of the problem and I could concentrate on paying of the debt, obviously not. Any advice would be appreciated.

Send them a recorded delivery letter and an e-mail boldly labelled COMPLAINT. then you can go to the ombudsman after eight weeks if it's not been resolved.

It's now a lot easier to start the complaint process as soon as possible, rather than try to get it resolved over the phone because you get the clock ticking early.

  • Thank you this is helpful. I will look into what you both have advised. Hopefully this nightmare will end soon.

What I find most frustrating with all these companies is that they just don't get it right first time.

It's greatt that there's someone like Vicky trawling the net for really frustrated & p''d-off people but it shouldn't be necessary to have someone who there to short-circuit the process to get it sorted out.

I feel sorry for all those at Npower who'll be losing their jobs because most of the problems are down to a failure of management to grasp the fundamental problem of just getting it right first time.

  • I changed my supplier from Npower to Ecotricity (who are very good) three years ago .Then I got a letter last January saying I owed them £33.00 which I did not--I wrote and told them this, and was sent another demand and then one from Telemessage debt collection agency. This was quite upsetting and worrying but I knew I did not owe it them and was not going to be bullied into paying it,I wrote another letter saying this. This was replied to by email saying the amount had doubled! Therefore I put in a complaint saying it was upsetting and I wanted it investigating. A few weeks later I received a letter saying they were sorry it was their mistake and please accept apologies!I thought I'd post this just to encourage others who are having trouble with Npower ...don't give up.

I know it probably doesn't help the original poster, but it might make her feel better that Npower aren't very quick at paying their debts either.

At Northampton CCBC County Court on 7 March, Npower Northern Limited (to use the company's full legal name) was ordered to pay me £225 in damages and court fees for pursuing me for a non-existent debt on an account that was closed in May 2015. After over six months of incorrect final bills, all of which either used incorrect readings, the wrong tariff, or both, during which time I responded telling the company this, and that therefore I didn't owe them anything and wouldn't be paying them anything, they passed the "debt" to a debt-collecting company, Past Due Credit Solutions Ltd in Glasgow, so I commenced County Court proceedings against Npower. After receiving the summons, surprise, surprise, they conceded that I didn't owe them anything after all, but - too late!

They failed to enter a defence and were ordered to make immediate payment of the judgement debt, but they haven't responded to that either, and a Warrant of Control was issued on 17 March directing Swindon County Court bailiffs to go to the company's registered office to collect the outstanding sum due, or alternatively to seize goods belonging to the company for sale in satisfaction of the judgement debt. These companies are quick to demand payment, but the complete opposite when it comes to settling their own debts.

As a final observation... the debt collection company is of the same ilk, ignoring both a Section 10 Data Protection Act 1998 Notice served on it, and a letter before proceedings under Section 13 of the same Act, after continuing to send demands for payment of the Npower "debt" despite being informed of the legal action against their client and the full circumstances. They are therefore now subject of a claim for S.13 DPA 1998 damages in Dumbarton Sheriff Court, and I look forward to receiving notice from the Sheriff Clerk's office that the summons has been served and that the legal proceedings are under way.
  • Hi hope someone can help. Back in 2012 my husband worked in a newly opened restaurant and opened an account with Npower on their behalf. But he left in February 2013 as the restaurant was due to close which it did shortly after. Then in August 2016 he receives a letter from the county court to our home address addressed to him (but as a Mrs) saying he owes npower £6k from bills dated June 2013 to July 2013. As no mention of the restaurant was stated he replied to the court saying we don't have an account with npower and will not pay this and he also told them that he is a MR not MRS. We didn't hear nothing back until a week ago he received a court judgement (again as MRS) so I called their solicitors which weren't helpful stating that this bill is for the restaurant and we need to pay or get a solicitor or go citizens advice bureau. What do we do? To be honest, we can't really afford a solicitor. This is really stressing us out and are scared we'll have bailiffs come to our home. Any help would be great

You should have attended court and disputed the bill.

You now need to see a solicitor as a matter of urgency and get the judgement set aside.

Also ask the court if it can be set aside - I don't know the procedures for this or whether the court can do it on your application or you have to get a solicitor to do I, but you MUST get the ball rolling NOW.

You should explain, as your defence, that the bill was not and is not yours and was set up for the restaurant and in the business's name and not yours and that any bill should have been sent to the liquidator, not you.

YOU NEED TO DO THIS AND DO IT NOW BEFORE BAILIFFS AND ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS SHOW UP DEMANDING PAYMET.

You also should have started your own thread instead of tacking your post on an old one.
