Should you have to give your employer proof of antenatal appointments?

    Things might of changed since I was pregnant (daughter is 10 next week), but I had letters for scans, but not for my midwife appointments. The first midwife appointment you made with the doctors receptionist, so you could get a hand written appointment card, but all the rest were made directly with the midwife, and just written in mine and her diaries.
    Did have in my notes that the appointments were every 2 weeks till near the end, which I could of shown work, which would of proved to them the amount of appointments but not the times.

    Out of principal I always scan my hospital appointment letters (not pregnant) and add it to my "appointments" and "invite" my colleagues and line manager so that they can see very clearly where I am going in the middle of the day!

    You would be surprised at how many of my colleagues get narky about it as they are scared that my routine will become the standard and they will also have to follow that procedure!!!!! LOL


    Your medical information is confidential though. There are lots of perfectly good reasons why somebody might not want their boss and everybody they work with to know exactly where they are going for their appointment and why.

    Of course. One pregnant lady who works in my office went off for a "scan" and came back with a new hairstyle!!!! Takes the absolute @@$£.

    Wouldn't agree in all circumstances. I had an appointment the other morning, was no point in me getting the bus to work to then leave after half an hour to get another bus to my appointment so I didn't go in first.

    Instead I went to view a house I was considering buying. Should I have just sat in the house instead?

    Wouldn't agree in all circumstances. I had an appointment the other morning, was no point in me getting the bus to work to then leave after half an hour to get another bus to my appointment so I didn't go in first.

    Instead I went to view a house I was considering buying. Should I have just sat in the house instead?

    If you've booked the morning off, do what you want. If the time off is paid, its not really on to get paid for viewing a house, is it?

    But sitting in the house doing nothing, waiting for the appointment and getting paid for it is okay? I don't agree, makes more sense to be productive.

    If you were getting paid for that time off, you should have gone in on time even if you did leave soon after, or at least offered to and be willing to do that.

    Did you pay the time back though? If you did - then absolutely fine. if not - then you should have gone to work! Why should you be given 30 minutes free of charge to conduct unnecessary personal business.

    My boss doesn't agree. With the nature of my work, being in for half an hour is pointless.

    Its a case of whether you habitually take the mick! If you are one of those that very often stay late, work through lunch, etc., then you shouldnt feel guilty over the very occassional half n hour. But if you are a Arrive on the dot, leave on the dot and take every available opportunity to steal a few minutes here and there, then, then you ruddy well should feel guilty.

    If you are happy with your work ethic - great. If your colleagues and employer are happy with your work ethic - even better.

    No there was no requirement to pay time back. I notified my boss of the appointment as required and advised to come in once finished which I did. If I stayed in the house I'd have done housework or a washing or something. That's still personal.

    I most certainly do no take the mick. I regularly work more than required and take most other medical appointments in my own time but I have no control over dates and times of my pregnancy related appointments. Annoyingly most are in the middle of the day and requires an hour and a half travel each way.

    In fact I only found out I was pregnant at 30 weeks so I don't actually need to take as much time off for appointments than if I'd known early.

    So you DID pay the time back by regularly working more than required! That's my point. And I have no idea what happened to the rest of my post???? It's been shortened?

    Its those that deliberately defraud the company/colleagues of time that upset me! From my point of view, its about give and take from both sides.
