  • I got my boxes here.

    very good :-)
  • We got loads of all shapes and sizes for free round the back of Argos...
  • The problem with finding a bunch of boxes from 'round the back of argos' is that they're probably going to fall to bits, or the base will collapse at the wrong time...

Buying boxes in from a good self storage company is the best idea. These boxes are new, clean and designed for the exact reason you're using them for...
  • Hi there, we have asked our local pizza place for boxes, and they have loads of really handy smaller-sized boxes, ideal for the heavier stuff. I also emailed friends to see if their work has any boxes to spare, and two friends came up trumps so I've not had to pay for any boxes at all. It is definitely worth asking the question amongst friends, and local firms who only go and break down boxes to recycle them. Catch them before they do this :)

    Good luck!

  • To whoever suggested the folding plastic crates - make sure you hook all the hooky bits together PROPERLY before putting anything in them! I speak from bitter experience as someone who used one of these for her teaching stuff on teaching practice and the whole thing collapsed on the way out to the car one night - never quite trusted them ever since.

Box offers/requests are forever popping up on our local Freecycle, supermarkets increasingly are a pain to get boxes from - the only one I had any joy from was the CoOp when we moved last year.

Other than that - butter up whoever takes in the stationery deliveries at your office - photocopy paper boxes are brilliantly strong, and boxes things like envelopes and the like come in are great for CDs and smaller stuff.

I've pretty much decided I'm packing everything in my suitcases and wheeling them up and down the road to the new house to unpack a bit at a time when our sale finally goes through after lettting my husband pack the kitchen plates up last time we moved, where he put EVERYTHING heavy in one box, it rained on move day so the bottom of the box got soggy and gravity finally won out as we went up the path to the new house.

Buying from a self storage company would probably be the most expensive way to buy removal boxes.

You could buy the same or probably better quality boxes from a company such as Hunnex who deal direct with the public but also supply a lot of the London removal companies. http://www.cjs.me.uk/boxeasy/productlist.html
  • I found lots of boxes on freecycle, but as I needed also lots of bubble wrap and tape and so on the best site was

    http://www.packnmove.co.uk/

really good service and proper wine boxes (which was what we needed to buy) and also the mug boxes and plate boxes are really good.
  • Hi,

I would go to your local industrial park and target a small business, as they normally have to pay to get them taken way and rubbish.

Worth a shot, just ask around.
  • Have a look here http://www.safestore.co.uk/

If you fill your details in for an online quote they'll email you a voucher for £20. My and the wife have bothe done this and my Dad is doing it at the weekend, so thats £60 of free boxes.

They're good quality boxes too, result!!

Are you sure the voucher is valid for boxes? It might be limited to storage or involve a minimum spend.

I'd suggest ringing local packaging companies who are usually cheaper than storage companies who add a mark up.

Scrounging boxes from shops tends to get boxes that are too large and impossibly heavy. For books I would go for 12 inch cube and for general stuff 18 inch cube.
