Garage Door Opened - Burglary/Wind?

Hi all,

As I was leaving for work this morning I saw that our garage door was open so that there was about a 2 foot gap at the bottom. There was only some old furniture, a bike, and a strimmer along with some painting stuff, but nothing was missing.

Below is a similar door with the same mechanism which pulls the top and side bolts when either the inside or outside handle is twisted. At least from the outside, the key locks and unlocks the handle which turns the mechanism which pulls the bolts in from the wall with the wires. The handle was still locked so it couldn't have been turned via the outside handle.

I'm not sure whether this was a break in, or whether it wasn't closed properly in the first place and it was blown open as it was very windy last night. There's no sign of forced entry at all. Looking at the mechanism I guess someone could hook the inside handle and pull it up with a long coat hanger, and assuming they had some sort of camera on a wire to see what they were doing. I have no idea really!

Does anyone have any idea what could have happened?

  • Seriously ... if nothing was taken, probably the wind.

Not so seriously ... Could be Gremlins  ... or a ghost . Nobody's died in there recently have they?

Maybe it was somebody looking for somewhere to sleep ... :D

 "I hear you knockin', but you can't come in ....."

If mine isn't pushed fully closed before turning the handle, one of the 'bolts' sometimes misses locating into the hole and has blown open on windy days on occasion.

I wouldn't be taking any chances for a while though. Get some deadbolts fitted.
  • Hi,

had you locked the door or just pulled it shut?

    I assume it was shut.
But it was definitely locked as the handle wouldn't turn without unlocking.
  • No signs of damage or forced entry and nothing stolen so there's no evidence you've been burgled. Just make sure it's closed in future as it looks like you've left it open.
