Energy Efficient Double or Triple pane glass

heartful
I was always confused on having what type of window for my house. Currently it has only a single pane window . Since it's winter I really wanted to upgrade my windows to more insulated one. Came across new article from Canglow Windows and Doors blog which solved my confusion but gave me rather tough choice on choosing in double and triple pane. I am ready to pay more for a better one and triple pane is the right choice I guess but before I choose, I need some expert advice again on having gas filled in between and about the E-coat in between the glasses ?

Did you know that just by hanging thick curtains with thermal lining will achieve almost the same energy efficiency as changing the windows so unless the wood has rotted through and require replacing then I really wouldn't advise it.
You can avoid your windows rotting by repainting them when required which should be around every 5 years.
Of course triple pane would in most cases have a better U value than double pane.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Of course triple pane would in most cases have a better U value than double pane.
The current building reg require a U value of 1.5 or below for replacement windows.
Its relatively cheap and easy to get that value down to 1.1 and the best triple glazed is around 0.6 .
Although thats a saving of 0.5 it would take years to get back the extra costs involved in buying triple glazing and these savings are tiny in reality.
This along with the fact that the vast majority of sealed unit manufacturers will only warranty their units for 5-10 years in timber windows the units may well fail before that saving is seen.
Probably make more savings by making sure the walls and roof are insulated to the maximum.
IMHO triple glazing is a waste of money unless you live in Scandanavia where its seriously cold in the Winter.
I would also just point out the blog the OP mentions is a Canadian website and the blog is materially incorrect with its "facts".0 -
I would just go with Double glazing from a reputable source with good frames. The benefits of triple glazing will be outweighed by the cost. And triple glazing with cheap frames will be little better than double glazing with decent frames.

If you're having complete replacement windows then triple glazing doesn't add much to the cost over double glazing. Some firms offer it for the same price (makes you wonder how realistic the original price was of course).
Glass coatings & argon gas are just ways of getting the u-value down, there are others. The final number is important, not how they get there.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0 -
Do you want double glazing just for heat or also for noise reduction? This is important as there is some tradeoff.
If you want to go ahead then get quotes for both double and tripple but it is unlikely to be worth going for the expensive options.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0
