Painting over cracked paint

Hi All,

The paint on my wall show little crack, therefore I was wondering how to sort this issue. I was thinking that applying a primer or couple of coat of diluted paint, and then paint on top of it would solve the problem, but since I am not an expert I would appreciate it if you could advise on this matter.

Thanks

Cheap and easy would be to gouge/scrape out the crack, fill it with some easy sand filler and paint. You might also try using caulk (get all the residue off before it dries) as this is slightly flexible. Both of these methods will mean the crack will likely return at some point in the not too distant future!

The proper way to do it would be to hack it back to the wall about and inch either side of the crack and use scrim tape to cover the crack for the whole length. Then fill the it, sand and paint.

    Regards

    Hi Phil,

the crack is extended to quite a large portion of the wall

you do not think applying a primer may seal the crack?

    Thanks

It will eventually crack again. The primer will not fill the crack properly nor stick the crack back together. By all means do what you suggest but it WILL crack again sometime.

    Hi Phil

you are quite right, since the crack is extended to most of the wall I think I am going to replaster the wall.

    Thanks

If the rest of the plaster is sound you will be wasting money. Repairing the crack as I mention would be the cheapest, easiest way to properly repair the crack.
