Using college skips or public bins

  • Where I live we have a weekly collection for plastic bottles / trays, tins, glass, paper, food waste, Then every fortnight we have our cardboard collected and the 140L bin for household waste. With the bin being so small 3 black bags is to much for the bin so you got to force the rubbish in the bin or the bin men will remove a bag and place it by the side of the bin. The only other option is to place the rubbish straight in the bin but then if it gets compacted it don't come out when the bin is emptied.

Someone putting rubbish in my individual wheelie bin, taking up around 1/3 of my total space (which a standard black bag does) is a little different from me putting a bag for life-ful in one of 4 or 5 available communal bins.

    But I take your point.

Unless there are a dozen or so other people doing the same as you, in which case the communal bins would soon start filling up.
  • I'm not going to leave a stinking chicken carcass in my bin when the council bins get emptied daily.
I never put chicken into the bin, after the carcus has been ridden of usable meat, stock made, the remnants are placed into the yard. It normally takes our eagles two days to rid the yard of the chicken.

I always throw my rubbish in a public bin around Christmas as the bin area shared with other flats is a disgrace as the tenants don't care.

My LA recommends bagging waste before it is put into the wheelie bin, which is what I do. It keeps the bin clean and makes it easy to empty. How frequently is your bin emptied? If it's very week like mine (although I don't put it put every week) then unless you have a lot of people in your house the amount of waste shouldn't be enough to cause difficulties - perhaps you need to increase the amount of recycling you do.

Every week?! Haha I wish ours was every week! Our LA pick up the general waste bin every THREE weeks! At Christmas it was almost 4 weeks!

If you can transport your rubbish to other people's bin or public bins you can take it to the tip, or make a better effort to recycle. I share two big bins with 11 other flats, and if I saw someone who was not a resident putting rubbish in our bins I would confront you about it. It's bad enough that two bins are not enough for our flats, mainly because of those who make no effort to recycle without some other freeloaded coming along and using the bin space.

I wouldn't put a whole bag of rubbish in a Council bin.

However, when my car starts to get a bit messy I will tidy it into the nearest bin over a period of time.

I have noticed many councils don't provide residents in flats recycling bins etc. I lived in a flat with no recycling bins. Nearest recycling point was over a mile away and I had no car.

At the moment, none of the other tenants in my block recycle as I see bottles etc in the bins in bin area.

I take my recycling to my parents and put it in the glass box or bags as it can take four weeks to fill up a bag
