Swap the cat for a breed that does not scratch furniture (Persians and Siamese apparently don't scratch leather sofas - I was told this by John Lewis in Nottingham)..... .

My OH has 3 persians and the sofa she normally sits in has a lot of scratches on one side. The persians scratch at the side of the sofa to get her attention when they want a treat. My sofa has no scratches as they do not ever "ask" me for treats :)

    That's what insurance is for!

True but insurance companies tend to only offer insurance when there is little chance of you actually claiming. I would say its pretty common for someone who has a cat to claim for damage surely?

I would try putting a cat post with catnip in the vicinity.
Citronella essential oil deters cats, diluted and sprayed around the area. I realise you can't spray the leather but maybe the surrounding area?

My cat does this simply to announce his presence in the room. He also climbs the curtains, wallpaper, destroys any cardboard boxes (after sleeping in them), and happily clears all shelves of anything he considers superfluous. Get used to it, its what cats do.

They wont just sell to those with cats...or other things/people/animals that damage sofas. For everyone that claims there will be those that don't for the reason you give, because its not that bad, because they forget who insures it etc. etc. It is these people that pay for the ones that claim!
