Getting tired of wrong information from MSE

The last few MSE emails have included quotes like 'if you are on the standard energy tariff you are definitely paying too much'. This is followed by a plug for the profitable to MSE, Cheap Energy Club.

If I use the Cheap Energy Club I'm significantly worse off compared to the Ebico STANDARD tariff that I'm on. I've reported this to the Cheap Energy Club and on an existing thread but just got fobbed off.

It's unacceptable that MSE is breaching its editorial code of conduct by lying that everyone is overpaying on the standard tariff and the desperate attempts to earn a fortune from the expensive Cheap Energy Club are despicable. What else is MSE lying about in the name of increasing profit?

It all depends on your own usage figures, property type and living habits. For the vast majority, being on a standard tariff is much more expensive.

Out of interest, what are your annual usage figures in KWH and how did you calculate it? What is your current tariff name and pence per KWH?

What area of the country are you in?

I would be intersted to see if I can replicate your result.

MSE CEC along with all other sites state that a typical user will be better off on a non standard tariff. To be better off with Ebico you are a very low user. I have just done a comparison using a ridiculously low 2500 gas and 1000 electric and Ebico were nowhere near the top. I would have saved on the gas compared to my current tariff, although other "regular" suppliers were still cheaper than Ebico, but the electric was actually dearer.

Complain to the ASA with a copy of the e-mail.

  • Are you comparing tarrifs with the same yearly useage, or just the direct debit you'd pay. As you'd need to compare like for like. I haven't tried the energy club yet, but if your current provider isn't in there, or depending on the deal you have now, you'd still need to decide is my current deal better or not.

Some people like to fix their deal for a certain rate, so if gas / oil prices / tax changes come in they know their tarrif won't change for x amount of time. This might mean though it is a higher rate that other standard deals just as some companies have been reducing their rates recently. So what is more important to you, having a fixed tarrif for x amount of time, or just the cheapest one right now and look again if the prices go up in the future.

As this is your second post on almost the same topic within as many weeks, and you've only made 8 posts in almost 5 years, I suggest you just ditch & switch :)

Based on a previous post your annual spend is £120 for electric and £180 for gas, which, based on an Ebico tariff on a prepayment meter is around 2300KWH for Gas and 1100KWH for electric.

Your usage is well outside the national averages, even for low users, which is 2500kwh Electric and 8500KWH Gas. You use a very low amount!

It is so atypical that the majority of the assumptions that comparison sites make (or sites like this make) do not apply to you. The fact you are on a prepayment meter further limits your choice and again makes your more outside the norm.

There are also usually caveats that any recommendations are based on typical consumption values.

Average/typical usage in the UK (not high or low) is 13,500KWH Gas and 3500KWH electric!

That's how far outside the norm you are with your use.

The vast majority of people, based on the national average figures for low, medium and high users are vastly overpaying if they are on a standard tariff.

I just helped a relative switch from a British Gas standard tariff. They use a similar KWH amount to the low user figures above. It cut their annual Gas and Electric Bills in half!

So I really do not see what you have to complain about. You did a comparison, (which is the aim of the email), the cheap energy club results did not give you false information. You are on the cheapest tariff for your atypical use! Be happy!

In addition, if you were on a credit meter, for the same usage, Bristol Energy beats the Ebico tariff in my area and......it is not a standard tariff!;) In fact, there are 11 other tariffs which are also cheaper!

    Hi Honda2ner,

Just to echo what others have pointed out on here, to calculate the estimated new costs of a tariff, Cheap Energy Club takes the usage which you’ve entered on your account and works out (using a tariff’s rates) how much this would cost you over a year and on average per month.

If you’re receiving incorrect savings trigger alerts, it’s likely that the information in your account doesn’t reflect your actual usage.

If you’re still concerned that the information you’re receiving is incorrect, contact us on energyclub AT moneysavingexpert .com with more details and we’ll have a look at your account for you.

Thanks to all that have replied, unfortunately only one person read my original post.

I'm not interested in switching, I know I'm on the best tariff. What's annoying me is that MSE has breached its editorial code of conduct by repeatedly stating that everyone will definitely be worse off on a standard tariff despite my contacting the cheap energy club to tell them that isn't true. I couldn't care less how extremely low my energy usage is but I do care when MSE appears to be lying for profit.

Also I'm not on a prepay meter and I don't pay by direct debit so I have to wonder about some of the replies!

Could all future correspondence please be about how the cheap energy club is advertised by MSE.

Well I for one certainly read your original post.

I think you may have misinterpreted my response as I was not speaking of energy suppliers ;)
