Just to provide some reality in amongst the "must have" high power specs, for XP I normally use a Dell Inspiron 8000 with 15" 1600x1200 resolution screen, 900MHz Pentium III CPU, 512MB of RAM and 10GB hard drive (the main limitation). Only 6 years old and it's more than ample for video playing, document and spreadsheet open, very heavy internet and email use (about 20,000 emails a year and all my work via the internet...). The lowest spec machine mentioned so far is more than ample for the "surfing, email, work, storing photos, music and MSN with webcam" uses.

It's easy to get caught up in the latest and greatest race. It's not necessary unless you're heavily into games.

Inexpensive, with an external drive for making backup copies of work, and don't fret too much if the inexpensive one gets dropped and needs to be replaced.
