Just to redress the balance a bit, I'm in Devon, on the mains, and our water has failed tests from time to time.

What this means I'm not sure. Probably that the water transport infrastructure is like other types; a bit cranky.

Anyway, it makes good tea and I don't drink it un-boiled.

    It means it's poorly [STRIKE]managed...[/STRIKE]
  • We have a well. It is all good except when we have failed to notice the uv tube needs cleaned. For adults this can risk d and v from e.coli. For children under five e.coli can mean kidney failure.

We use bottled water for drinking unboiled but well water for everything else. Our water bill is twelve quid a quarter.
  • We live in Bucks on mains water and pay £600 per year for water and sewerage. Most places in Devon that we are interested in are on private drainage so that cost also needs to be factored in along with ?£200 every 9months as per PaulCooper's comment above. The estate agents have
said it is a plus factor to be on a borehole to save water rates, but then they would say that.

In the name of all you hold dear, either avoid a septic tank or see how much a rolling pump-out deal with a nearby-enough chandler would cost you.
We can always UV the water coming in but the septic tank is one sensitive plant. Now the supermarkets do own label Ecover it's easier but ye gods...

I would say that if anyone feels unwilling or unable to meet the running cost of a septic tank and borehole, they might not be ready for a move to deepest Devon.

There are other costs too, like being maybe 20 miles from a decent supermarket, cinema or major workplace. No mains gas in many villages either.

Of course there are many country properties closer to town than that, but they will come with a price tag commensurate with their convenience.
  • Sorry about the mis-spelling of Weils disease, just went by pronounciation of a friend whose son had it. Yes, thanks Davesnave. We don't have a problem with no mains gas and not being on mains drains. Always had mains water though. Partner is less inclined to have a borehole, only from the health point of view, just a matter of factoring in the actual costs, which don't seem too bad. All the lovely places that tick all the boxes seem to be without mains water, and compromises have to be made in any move. Now I'm just looking for some maintenance figures from those that are off the mains really. Suppose it depends on what filtration system you have, as it appears some folk don't even need that.

My relatives have two water sources; private and water board. The private source is naturally very clean, and has been for the past 45 years.

Guess which one we choose when fetching a glass of water to drink!
  • When my family lived in East Yorkshire, we had water pumped from our own bore hole. Every time you turned a tap, you could hear the pump come into action.

In the whole time we were there, nobody suffered from any problems associated with the water, and that included two young children.

It tasted so much better than normal tap water, and was always ice cold.
