Retail customer rights to observe till

Does anyone know if the customer has a right to be able to observe or monitor the till at a checkout. Therefore able to see the amounts as charged.

I ask as I have noticed a well known supermarket had changed. The tills like most have a small screen that can be turned to face the customer - now in the last weeks all the checkouts have this small monitor turned inward.

Previously customers were able to see each item and cost as scanned,

  • But the customer not only can see the prices of the purchases when picked up from the shelf but is also given a receipt with all prices of each good quoted.

What difference would it be if the little screen was turned away at the checkout?

You can usually place yourself at a till where you can check but as they usually whip items through pretty speedily it's pointless.

I don't think such a "right" exists nor am I sure what purpose it would serve given that most receipts are itemised.

Not sure there is even a law saying all shops must have a till.

Nor to have a till that the customer can see.

Half the time, it doesn't make any difference anyway. If you are buying any promotional packs of stuff, the discounts are knocked off at the end. Tesco Tonight, my bill showed up at £106. Then sub total was pressed and it came down to £91. so it was only showing normal prices until the end of the transaction.

Aldi don't stop you from seeing the display, if you are stood in the correct position you can see it clearly...
