The rac

Have the standards in the rac dropped a lot recently
OH has been a member for many decades.
This evening she phoned them because the car had a puncture when out at a local supermarket,
She rang and rang and rang and there was no reply.
The car does'nt have a spare tyre but we discovered it has a compressor so we inflated the tyre and gave up on the call and limped home.
At home she tried again to phone to get the tyre temp., repaired so we can take tomorrow for a proper repair.
She got though and they said they would be a an hour and a half we said ok.
Almost immediately they called back and said they were very busy so will send contractor who will phone when nearer.
Then we get a gary from someone in Maldon phone us - who obviously did'nt really want to come out and just wanted to put his feet up - he obviously had no equipment and even asked if we had a inflation kit.
He was so obstructive we just said forget it we will have to sort some other way.
We still have a care with a puncture.
OH spends hundred of pounds on on the top rac service.
After many many years guess who will not be renewing.

Glad to see they're prioritising their work and going to those most in need. I'm sure there was more demand for their services than someone at home with a flat tyre.
While I get their cover for free I won't be using anyone else.0 -
Apart from the no reply (they were contacted by the SOS people for me) I can't see the issue.
When broke down on the M6 a couple of weeks ago, they arrived in half an hour. Couldn't fix it and, as it was an automatic, they couldn't tow it.
They sent out an agent who was near the end of their driving time to uplift, so they recovered me to their depot (no time to take me home, I'd need relayed and it would take a lot longer) and gave me a car to get the 300 miles home.
Car arrived home the next afternoon.
You were able to pump the tyre up enough to "limp home" from the safety of a supermarket car park, could you not have done the same in the morning? From the safety of your home? And limped to a tyre place?
I'll probably jump to the AA next year as they will be cheaper, but the RAC service in both cases here was sensible.0 -
I forgot to say when this gary phoned he go completely the wrong side of of the task asking where was the vehicle be recovered to - we hadn't ask for any recovery just repair.
I suppose the moral is who needs these pr*ts at the silly subscriptions when you have to organize things yourself anyway.0 -
I don't know why it's still called the Royal Automobile Club - because it long since ceased to be a club for the benefit of it's members.
It's a business now - and like any other business, it's profits for the shareholders which is the main concern.
The AA is exactly the same.
Best to join a genuine club where the 'profits' or proceeds are ploughed back into improved benefits and services.
I'm a member of the biggest car club in Europe (the biggest in the world outside of the USA)
It's called the ADAC0 -
Isn't the Royal automobile club completely separate and nothing to do with the recovery service called RAC?0

That's a question, not a moral...0 -
I am with AA but that's included in the monthlies.
Never had to use one.
Hope your car is sorted now.0 -

If you mean the very expensive private member's club in Pall Mall, London then yes.
I don't know anyone who is a member of that - except the Duke of Edinburgh - and he needs a breakdown/recovery service like a hole in the head.
They sold off the breakdown service and other bits and pieces in 1998.
It's since changed hands several times and is now jointly owned by the Carlyle Group and the Government of Singapore Investment Corp.
It's big business - innit?0 -
It's a breakdown reovery service, not a mobile mechanic service.0
