Credit card for travel?

My boyfriend and I have never had a credit card before. We have checked our eligibility and have about a 95% chance of getting accepted which is great. But which one do we go for? We need one that doesn't have a high APR, ideally with a free interest period and one where we don't get charged for using it abroad. We are travelling throughout America, Fiji and then staying in Australia for a year or so. The card is merely for when we need it rather than a card that will be in constant use.
Any help would be really appreciated guys!
Thanks in advance and I hope that all made sense!

You probably won't get all that, especially with a first card.
Halifax Clarity doesn't charge a forex fee.
Some cards will have 0% on purchases (see the link on the home credit card banner).
Some cards will have a lower APR, but probably neither of the above features.
If you can aim to clear in full each month, that would take care of one of the problems. In fact, two of them.0 -

Which eligibility checker did you use? There's one specifically oriented to travel-suitable cards at https://creditcards.moneysavingexpert.com/?travel and further details on which are best at http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/travel-credit-cards.
However, as zx81 says, "one that doesn't have a high APR, ideally with a free interest period and one where we don't get charged for using it abroad" is a pretty ambitious set of requirements, so be prepared to compromise!0 -
If you never have one, aqua will be a good to start. And with MasterCard, the rate is lower
